European Forest Institute

The European Forest Institute (EFI) is an international organization of European countries with headquarters in Joensuu / Finland. Your main objective is to research on forest policy at pan - European level, including the different aspects that must be considered in the design of forest policy into consideration ( environmental, forest use, markets, and others).

History

The EFI was founded on 9 September 1993 as an association under Finnish law with headquarters in Joensuu. With the creation of the Convention on the European Forest Institute of the club was changed to 28th August 2003 into an international organization. The reasons were mainly in the Finnish association law, which led to high tax burdens on employees, which researchers relatively unattractive conditions were offered to cooperate. The Convention was the mid 2007 by 15 European countries, the States Parties ratified. Members of the EFI are more than 130 organizations from over 30 European countries.

Other facilities include the regional offices that deal with specific regional priorities. Since 2007, the EFIMED concerned with headquarters in Barcelona with the peculiarities of forestry in the Mediterranean .. In April 2009, in Freiburg im Breisgau the EFICENT furnished. It focuses on the Central European countries Germany, France, Switzerland, and the Benelux countries. An integral component of the EFICENT is the Observatory for European Forests (OEF ), based in Nancy, France. The Observatory has, in contrast to the other regional offices, a pan- European focus and supports EFI particularly in its information strategy and data delivery for forest policy decisions at the national and international level. More EFI regional offices will be established in the future in Vienna ( Central Eastern Europe ) and Copenhagen ( Northern Europe / Scandinavia).

The EFI also manages a number of project centers that deal specifically with specific questions. These are project-based groupings of different organizations to the forestry sector, whose work is coordinated by an EFI member. They are financially autonomous and have a maturity of normally five years. The EFI is currently coordinating (August 2009) six project centers ( CONFOREST, euforic, IEFC, innoForce, PHOENIX, PROCES ).

The Scientific Advisory Board (Scientific Advisory Board ) is to ensure the quality of work of the EFI and its project centers by evaluating the projects carried out.
