European Golden Shoe

The Golden Shoe is an award in European football. It is awarded annually to the top scorer of the season. Only player to be considered, playing in the top divisions in each of the UEFA member associations.

For the first time the award was given by the French magazine France Football 1968. The time Soulier d'Or -called trophy was awarded to the player who scored the most goals in a season in league games. The number of matches played and the relative skill level of the league did not play a role. In 1987 the Romanian Rodion Cămătaru secured with 44 goals the trophy. Long Austrian Anton Polster led the ranking with 39 goals, has been overtaken even by Cămătaru, who scored 21 goals in their last six league games. A few years later granted a Romanian official that Cămătarus victory was achieved by manipulation. Pad was subsequently a Golden Boot.

Between 1991 and 1996, no prize was awarded. The Cypriot Football Federation protested against the victory of Darko Pančev (34 goals), claiming that the top scorer of the Cypriot league would have generated 40 goals. However, both scorers of the Cypriot League had scored only 19 goals. Pančev received the 2006 but still a Golden Boot. Since 1997, the prize is awarded by the Association of European Sports Media (ESM ). Through a point system, the different skill levels of the European leagues are considered. The decisive factor here is the placement of the league in the UEFA five year ranking.

Nine players have won the Golden Boot award more than once. Gerd Müller, Eusébio, Dudu Georgescu, Fernando Gomes, Mário Jardel, Thierry Henry, Diego Forlan and Cristiano Ronaldo won two times and Lionel Messi as the only three times.
