European Molecular Biology Organization

The European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO ) is a European scientific organization in the field of molecular biology. Founded in 1964, EMBO currently has over 1,400 elected members in Europe and 70 associate members around the world. New members are nominated and elected by other members because of special scientific achievements.

Organization

EMBO has a Board of Directors whose Secretary General is currently Professor Anton Berns. EMBO Director is Prof. Maria Leptin. The organization is based in Heidelberg, next to the European Molecular Biology Laboratory ( EMBL). EMBO is mainly funded by the founded for this purpose, the European Molecular Biology Conference ( EMBC ), an international organization whose members include 27 European countries at the time.

Activities

EMBO promotes a variety of ways the basic molecular biology research. Particularly important are the EMBO fellowships for young researchers; popular are also organized by EMBO scientific training courses and conferences. EMBO publishes four scientific journals, the EMBO Journal, EMBO reports EMBO Molecular Medicine and Molecular Systems Biology.
