European Monetary Institute

The European Monetary Institute (EMI) was an institution of the European Union. It was founded in 1994 at the beginning of the second stage of European Economic and Monetary Union.

It replaced the Committee of Governors and was the predecessor institution founded in 1998, the European Central Bank ( ECB). The tasks of the institute were the strengthening of cooperation between the national central banks, a stronger coordination of their monetary policy and the implementation of the preparatory work for the establishment of the European System of Central Banks ( ESCB), for the conduct of a single monetary policy and for the creation of the single currency.
