European Parliament Committee on Foreign Affairs

The Committee on Foreign Affairs, Human Rights, Common Security and Defence Policy (short: AFET) is one of the 20 committees of the European Parliament. It is chaired by Elmar Brok.

The Committee is responsible both for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP ) and the European Security and Defence Policy ( ESDP). Other tasks are the relations with other EU institutions and bodies, international organizations like the UN and with third countries and candidate countries of the EU. In the latter case, the Committee conducts negotiations and concludes treaties. Another field of work of the Committee is in issues of human rights, protection of minorities and the promotion of democracy in other countries. Both for the human rights policy as well as for defense policy, there is a sub- committee to assist the main committee.

Subcommittee on Human Rights

The Subcommittee on Human Rights ( DROI ) supports the Committee on Foreign Affairs on issues of human rights, protection of minorities and the promotion of democratic values ​​in third countries.

The subcommittee also established in 2004 on Security and Defence ( Sede ) supports the Committee on Foreign Affairs in its powers within the European Security and Defence Policy ( ESDP).
