The European elections in June 1979 was the first European election to the European Parliament in the history of the European Community. It took place on 7 and 10 June 1979. The previous European parliaments were formed by representatives of the national parliaments. It was chosen in all nine Member States according to national electoral laws by the people. The average turnout was 63 percent. Strongest fraction was the Socialist Group. As Parliament President Simone Veil was elected.
