European Parliament election, 2004 (Belgium)

The European elections in Belgium in 2004 was held on 13 June 2004. It was conducted as part of the EU held the 2004 European elections, with 24 seats went in the European Parliament in Belgium. Of this total, 14 Dutch-speaking electoral college, 9 on the French-speaking and one on the German -speaking electoral college.

Electoral system

Active entitled to vote at any Belgians from the age of 18 who has applied his residence in Belgium or postal voting for the Belgian electoral lists. Also, EU citizens are entitled to vote under the additional condition that they are registered on the electoral roll. Passive right to vote, every citizen is after the age of 21 years who has his residence in an EU Member State and, depending on the electoral college dominates the Dutch, French or German language.

In Belgium, voting is compulsory. Violations can be punished with a fine.

The choice is one of proportional representation, which means that each party gets seats in proportion to their share of the nationwide valid votes allocated. The electoral area is divided into four constituencies Flemish Region, Walloon Region, the German-speaking region and Brussels-Capital Region.
