European Telephony Numbering Space
The European Telephone Numbering Space (English European Telephony Numbering Space, ETNS) was a phone number range for Europe. He was parallel to the primaries for each country and served to provide Europe-wide phone numbers for international companies, services and individuals.
ETNS began in 2001 and was completed in early 2010. The country code 388-3, which was awarded by the International Telecommunication Union ITU in Recommendation E.164 for Europe will be reclaimed at the end of 2010.

There were four ETNS services:
Public services 388-3-1
These would -profit and community- based services for the general public, which are designed in Europe by its very nature; profit-oriented or focused on competing applications fall within the number range for customer service applications.

Customer service applications 388-3-3
This area was customer of companies and other organizations, including non-profit organizations reserved. The customer service applications included, among others:

Customer service applications have been characterized by the service code 3, which followed the ETNS code. In the service code, the seven-digit phone number followed.

Corporate networks 388-3-5
This service category was intended for businesses and other organizations, including non-profit and governmental organizations. The category " Business Networks" should allow organizations to interconnect their networks, such as virtual private networks (VPN ) to map to the room number 3883. They served not for customer service applications or for use by individuals.
Corporate networks were characterized by the service code 5, which followed the ETNS code. In the service code followed by a nine-digit number.

Personal numbers 388-3-7
This area was intended for personal and business use by individuals.
The personal numbers were characterized by the service code 7, which followed the ETNS code. In the service code followed by a nine-digit number.
Format: 00-3883 -7- XXX -XXX -XXX.
Technology
A European number one could apply to network operators. This also taught a call forwarding to a phone number in Europe, for example, a call center or a mobile number.
The cost of a call within Europe to a 3883- number should be the same as the cost of a national long distance calls, the cost of the call forwarding should the holder of the European number carry.

Technical implementation
Although the code was officially introduced in 2000, offered according to a survey of c't in January 2005, no German-language network operators 3883- phone numbers. Also the accessibility of its network, if connections with the area code in other networks should be achieved, could guarantee no network provider.
In July 2005 it was decided by the Electronic Communications Committee (ECC ) to suspend all activities as administrator of the European Telephone Numbering Space, to the identified weaknesses of ETNS are solved.
This decision was made because the ECC sees faced on the telecommunications market, new requirements and no separate possibility is to change the current situation of ETNS. If the apparent weaknesses (eg lack of commercial interconnection arrangements and market demand ) are solved, the ECC will begin ETNS Administration function.
