European Union of the Deaf

The European Union of the Deaf (short: EUD ) is a - and by his own admission, the only - profit organization that represents the interests of deaf people at European level. Members of the Association are the national Deaf organizations in the Member States of the European Union. The EUD is itself a member of the World Federation of the Deaf and the European Disability Forum. President of the EUD is the Icelandic Berglind Stefánsdóttir. Seat of the EUD is in Brussels, Belgium.

History

The British Deaf Association in 1985 invited the representatives of the national Deaf organizations in the European Economic Community to a meeting. At 6 to 7 March 1985, the representatives of nine national Deaf organizations met in London. They decided on 6 March 1985, the foundation of the European Community Regional Secretariat, which was renamed on 10 October 1994 in the European Union of the Deaf. In May 2012, the EUD has 30 full members and six associate members.
