European Year of Languages

The European Year of Languages ​​was proclaimed by the European Union, together with the Euro Europe in 2001 as the European Year to prevent linguistic impoverishment.

The aim was to obtain the linguistic and cultural diversity of Europe. With three hundred different projects, the EU wanted to encourage all citizens to learn languages ​​so that all Europeans to continue to dominate in addition to their mother tongue and two other languages ​​. In order for the citizens of Europe should be encouraged to develop their language skills and to familiarize yourself with the linguistic heritage of Europe. In this case, no language should be preferred. The focus, therefore, should not only be the official languages ​​of the European Union are, but also those languages ​​which have designated the Member States to implement the decision on the European Year of Languages. In some cases there was talk even of a preference for the "small" languages.
