Eurostat

The Statistical Office of the European Union, Eurostat short or ESTAT, is the European Union ( EU) administrative unit for the creation of European official statistics and has its headquarters in Luxembourg. She has the rank of General of the European Commission and is assigned to the Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs.

Development

Eurostat is clear from the 1952 furnished Statistical Service of the ECSC. This went on in the 1958 Joint Statistical Service of the European Communities. As of 1959, the joint facility Statistical Office of the European Communities ( SOEC ) was called.

On 23 April 2008 Walter Radermacher was appointed Director General of Eurostat. Previously, he was President of the German Federal Statistical Office.

Tasks

Eurostat compiles statistics on countries of the EU, by the national statistical offices of the Member States ( Germany: Federal Statistical Office, in Austria: Statistics Austria ) are collected and made available. An important role is played by Eurostat as regards the harmonization of statistical definitions and methods of calculation. Thus it is, for example, ensure that the EU convergence criteria are determined in each country by a comparable methodology.

Eurostat collects regional data for the EU member states and candidate countries. It uses the NUTS regional breakdown for the compilation of statistics. As part of the so-called " Urban Audit " also urban statistics are created.

Equipment

Eurostat 2011, there were about 900 people, mainly civil servants, employed (and hence much less than half the number of employees as of the German Federal Statistical Office ). The total budget in 2010 amounted to 80 million euros.
