The 11th Grand Prix de la Chanson Européenne euro vision, which is the official title this year, took place on 5 March 1966 at Luxembourg, as the defending champion France Gall was started for this country.

Special

As a new rule was introduced in 1966 for the first time that any country could only recite texts in their own language. This was due to the Swedish contribution in the last year, when the artist singing exclusively in English, has been decided.

Udo Jürgens winner was with the song Merci, Chérie. After 1964 and 1965, he joined again for his home country of Austria and made it into this third attempt on the podium. He was awarded with 31 points, almost twice as many as second-placed Sweden.

Curious thing

The British representative Kenneth McKellar is currently the only artist that has occurred during the song contest in a kilt. Milly Scott, the representative of the Netherlands, was the first black singer in the competition.

The second-placed Sweden received a total of 16 points, including 15 of the Scandinavian neighbors Norway and Denmark and Finland. The hall crowd was not pleased about it. Portugal also received 5 out of 6 points from neighboring Spain.

German preliminary

After the bad German results in the previous two years (two last places with zero points ) Hessischer Rundfunk sought from internal Margot Eskens to represent Germany. From 85 submitted titles sought a jury of nine members from the title for Luxembourg.
