The 33 Euro Vision Song Contest took place on 30 April 1988 at Simmonscourt Pavilion at the Royal Dublin Society in Dublin instead. He was moderated by Pat Kenny and Michelle Rocca. Winner was the future and French-Canadian superstar Celine Dion with Ne pas sans moi partez, which was known only in the French-speaking world at the time. This was the second and to date last victory of Switzerland in the competition. In addition, the song currently was last winning entry in French, a language that had the ESC until then very dominant.

The host station RTÉ had taken in the production of the show is to modernize the event to appeal to a younger audience and the producers hired numerous music videos and youth programs Declan Lowney. He was also responsible for the organization of the Intervalacts, in which the band Hothouse Flowers visited eleven countries in the music video for Do not Go, at the time it was the most expensive Irish music video that has ever been produced.

Two giant video screens replaced the previous scoreboard, on the one hand was the first computer-based scoring track in the history of the ESC, images of the performers from the Green Room shown on the other side. The gigantic stage, designed under the direction of Michael Grogan and Paula Farrell, was the then largest and most advanced in the history of the Euro Vision Song Contest. To compensate for the size of the stage with the limited Außmaßen the hall, the space around the audience was intentionally darkened and waived wide shots of the audience to leave the hall seem bigger than it actually was.

Special
