Euskaltzaindia

The Royal Academy of the Basque Language ( Euskaltzaindia, Real Academia de la Lengua Vasca ) in Bilbao ( in Basque: Bilbo ) with branch offices in Bayonne, San Sebastian and Vitoria- Gasteiz is a facility for the care and standardization of the Basque language, as well as to their exploration by philological and etymological studies.

It was founded in 1919 by the Spanish King Alfonso XIII. founded. A year earlier the representations ( Diputaciones ) of the four provinces with population Basque language (Vizcaya, Guipuzcoa, Alava and Navarra) with similar objectives, the Society of Basque Studies ( Eusko Ikaskuntza, Sociedad de Estudios Vasco ) had established that there is parallel to today.

2005, the school had 23 members, 20 of whom speak Basque as their mother tongue. She has commissions for Lexigraphik ( vocabulary), grammar, linguistic atlas, onomastics ( onomastics ), literature and spoken language.

Under Franco, she had no official status, but presented as a common written language for all dialects of Basque Euskera 1968 Batua ago. 1976, a year after the death of Franco, she found official recognition as a royal academy. In France, it has been recognized since 1995.
