Euston tube station

Euston [ ju ː stən ] is an underground station of the London Underground in the London Borough of Camden. It is located under the main station Euston in the Travelcard Zone 1 and is the intersection of the Victoria Line with the two sections of the Northern Line (via bank or via Charing Cross). In 2011, 35.32 million passengers used the station.

The Station Euston Square the Circle Line is not it under the train station, but about 250 meters to the southwest. It is accessible only by busy roads.

History

Northern Line

On May 12, opened in 1907, the City and South London Railway (C & SLR, now the Bank branch of the Northern Line ), a station under the Euston Train Station. She was from the terminus of a newly built extension of fishing. Built she was in the usual C & SLR design ( island platform in a tunnel with a large diameter ). Built in an unusual Moroccan style station building was located at the Eversholt Street near the head station of the London and North Western Railway. It was reached by elevators and stairs.

The Charing Cross, Euston and Hampstead Railway ( CCE & HR, now the Charing Cross branch of the Northern Line ) opened a few weeks later, on June 22, 1907, its main line between Charing Cross and Archway (then called Highgate ), with a branch line to Golders Green.

It was originally planned to run the distance in a straight line from Warren Street to Camden Town. But the company decided to use a little detour in order to exploit the potential passenger in the station can. The station building was built just west of the station hall. It was designed by Leslie Green, and consisted of the typical CCE & HR station buildings glazed terracotta bricks.

Although separately installed and operated, the stations of the C & SLR and the CCE & HR were close enough to be connected together. The fact that the two companies were not direct competitors, favored this project. Between the elevators of the C & SLR and the eastern end of the CCE & HR platform a slightly inclined pedestrian tunnel was built soon after the opening.

At the same time they built a second pedestrian tunnel leading to a chute with additional elevators and a fire escape from the first tunnel. From there, the main hall of the station could be achieved. The companies still had separate entrances and elevators, but soon it was realized by that cluster of three inputs were not necessary. For this reason, located outside the main railway station station buildings were closed. The previous inputs have been preserved as ventilation shafts, while the C & SLR station building had to make way for a construction project.

1913 took over as owner of the CCE & HR, the Underground Group, the C & SLR. Shortly thereafter, plans were drawn up to extend both lines and combine together in Camden Town and Kennington. On August 8, 1922 we completed the C & SLR route north of Moorgate in order to extend the tunnel profile in order to increase capacity. The operation was resumed on April 20, 1924, including an addition built extension to Camden Town. The name of the merged line was changed in 1926 in Morden - Edgware Line and 1937 finally in Northern Line.

Victoria Line

The Victoria Line was planned so that it can be switched on as many existing stations to other rail transit and the existing lines are relieved. Also you stayed on it as often as possible to allow the transfer at the same platform. In the Euston central platform had reached on the Bank branch of the Northern Line limit of its capacity, which is why a little further south built a new platform. In the old tunnel one of the two tracks was removed to create more space.

Between the old and the new tunnel the Northern Line was created in parallel, a new station on the Victoria Line. To accommodate the additional passengers expected, they built new connection paths, two distribution levels with escalators and a fire escape. On 1 December 1969, the completely newly built station complex was opened and the old routes used since then as ventilation shafts.
