Euthydemus I

Euthydemus I was a king of the Greco -Bactrian kingdom, who ruled from about 235-200 BC. He was originally from Magnesia, although it remains unclear which city of this name, he really came. Euthydemus I seems to have forcibly removed his predecessor, but little is known about his reign known to Antiochus III. attacked him in the year 206 BC and tried to incorporate the lost Bactrian province back into the Seleucid Empire. The following war lasted three years and it was even the capital of Bactria besieged. Antiochus III. did not succeed, and then it came to peace negotiations, during which Euthydemus ' I. son, Demetrius even a daughter of Antiochus III. should marry.

Perhaps for Near Ai Khanoum comes an altar to Hestia, where the goddess is asked to grant the king and his son Demetrios protection.

Euthydemus I. is otherwise mainly known from his coins, on the one hand a young, on the other hand show an older man. This may indicate a longer reign, but it has been also suggested that there were two kings of this name.
