Eutolmius Tatian was a late ancient Roman politician of the 4th century AD

The Eutolmii family came from the Syrian region. Tatian Tatian was the son of Antonius, governor ( praeses ) of Caria from 360 to about 364 Tatian began about the time of the governorship of his father, his career in the territorial administration. Around the year 357, he was a lawyer. After that, he was assistant ( assessor ) with a governor, a vicar, a proconsul and two prefects. He was then governor of the Thebaid (the year is not dated ). From 367-370, he held the position of Prefect Augustalis. Between 370 and 374 he managed in personal union the province of Syria, together with the diocese of Oriens and then moved on to the central administration. There he worked as comes sacrarum largitionum 374-380 in the imperial financial administration. After about a year service under Theodosius I. Tatian left office. Shortly prior to leaving for a campaign against the usurper Magnus Maximus appointed Theodosius I Tatianus for praetorian prefect of the East ( 388-392 ). While there is some evidence in the legislation this year that Tatian the absence of the ruler to used to operate an independent religion with politics rather anti-clerical terms, but can range from a political upheaval in favor of the Gentiles be no question. In the year 391 Tatian was honored with the ordinary consulate, which he held jointly with Quintus Aurelius Symmachus.

The increasing in the last years of the reign of Theodosius intolerance of paganism, the greed of Rufinus after Prätorianerpräfektur and the fact that Tatian was some pelts in the management of finance, led to the dismissal and imprisonment of Tatian. Later Tatian had to go into exile.
