Geographical distribution and habitat

The species occurs in northern Europe including the British Isles, mainly in coastal areas. It is also found in North-West Russia, Siberia, Afghanistan, Mongolia and Tibet. By involving wirima Hardwick, 1965 as subspecies, Euxoa cursoria has a Holarctic distribution. It prefers sandy grassland and beach areas.

Way of life

Euxoa cursoria is one generation per year. The nocturnal moths fly from early July to mid-September. They come to artificial light sources and also visit the bait. The caterpillars feed mainly on the roots and lower leaves of several herbaceous plants and grasses. They overwinter and pupate in June of the following year. The species is occasionally a pest of asparagus (Asparagus ).

Endangering

Euxoa cursoria comes in Germany in the northern federal states, there is usually rare and therefore on the Red List of endangered species in Category 2 ( high risk ) classified.

System

The genus Euxoa is broken down by Fibiger (1990 ) into four subgenera. It represents the kind in the Nominatuntergattung Euxoa ( Euxoa ) Hübner, 1821. In a correction to the first volume of the Noctuidae Europaea he represents the partially regarded as an independent species Euxoa Virima Hardwick, 1965 as a subspecies of Euxoa cursoria.
