Life
Eva Le Gallienne was the daughter of the English poet Richard Le Gallienne and his Danish wife, the journalist Julie Norregaard. Her parents divorced in 1903 when her father was a well known womanizer and drinker. After the divorce, she moved with her mother to Paris. After her acting training, she went to America in 1920 and celebrated their first major success on Broadway. She had set out to establish itself in the U.S., a theater culture, as she knew from Europe. In 1926 Eva Le Gallienne their own theater Civic Repertory Theatre in New York, in 1932 they had to close due to the economic crisis the theater. In 1946 she co-founded with her former life partner Margaret Webster and Cheryl Crawford, the famous touring theater American Repertory Theatre ( ART). She was all her life artistically challenging and rejecting more lucrative contracts than they could afford. Her first film role, she took only 80 years! 1986 awarded her Ronald Reagan with the National Medal of Arts, the highest artistic honor in the USA. Because of health problems, Eva Le Gallienne moved back to the 1980s from the stage and died at the age of 92 at her home in Weston.
