Evagrius of Antioch

Evagrius ( Evagrius ) of Antioch († 392/93 ) was from 388 bishop of his native city of Antioch, where he died. He was with Emperor Valentinian I, known Pope Damasus I and Jerome. He was one of the few Greek Church writers who dominated the Latin language.

Evagrius translated about the year 373, the Vita Antonii of the Alexandrian bishop Athanasius (c. 300-373 ), which already created 360 Life of St. Anthony (251? -356 ), Into Latin. With his translation he was instrumental in the spread of the Vita Antonii and thus also to the spread of Christian monasticism in the west of the Roman Empire.
