History

On October 12, 1849 Hermannsburg Pastor Louis Harms began with the formation of the first missionaries. That is why this day is considered the beginning of the Hermannsburg Mission. To this day, young people are trained for service in the worldwide Church on Mission Seminar Hermannsburg. On May 25, 1977, was from the free work of the Mission Institute Hermannsburg - also known as Hermannsburg Mission - of as a joint institution of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hanover, Brunswick and Schaumburg- Lippe from the merger of "Mission Institute Hermannsburg " and the Hildesheim Central " Evangelical Lutheran Mission ( Leipzig Mission ) to Erlangen " was founded. Works in close cooperation with the Hessian churches, the Protestant Church of the Augsburg Confession of Alsace and Lorraine, and over 20 mission societies and circles of friends.

The legal form of a private foundation remained. Seat of the Evangelical-Lutheran. Mission work in Lower Saxony ( ELM) is Hermannsburg. A branch office in Hildesheim was closed on 30 June 2006.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1992 sparked the club of the "Leipzig Mission" and the Evangelical Lutheran Mission, headquartered in Leipzig Leipzig was founded. The work focuses on India. However, the ELM does its own India work as an independent partner in addition to the " Leipzig Mission " on.

The ELM today

The Evangelical Lutheran Mission in Lower Saxony is today a global mission work, appoint the staff in Lutheran churches in Africa, Asia and Latin America and communities as well as projects supported financially there.

It worked worldwide in 2007 with 19 churches in 17 non-European countries. Main focus of the work in Ethiopia, Southern Africa (South Africa, Botswana, Malawi, Swaziland), Latin America (Brazil, Peru), India and the non-European Russia.

In addition to theologians healthcare professionals, teachers, artisans, agricultural and administrative specialists are sent abroad. In addition, provides a volunteer program for young people a year, the chance to work with a partner church and to meet so in a foreign culture. The ELM is recognized sending organization in the context of the voluntary service of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development weltwärts.

The official publication of the ELM is the journal giving information, which is created in collaboration with five other mission agencies six times a year.

In Ludwig Harms House in Hermannsburg, a conference and events center, the exhibition " Candace - Mission Possible " interested an insight into the world of networked working ELM and its partner churches. The ELM is a member of Churches and Missions in Germany (EMW ).

Structure

The ELM is a Germany team, a foreign team, volunteers and other services abroad, the Bureau international church cooperation ( BikZ ) in Hanover and the Central subdivided, where departments are assigned:

Organs

Organs of the ELM are the Mission Committee and the Board.

Missionsauschuss

The senior Missionsauschuss consists of 19 members who are appointed by the church leaders bodies of the country's churches, including the relevant competent for Mission department heads of the regional church offices. Nine members selects the Mission Committee. The members are elected for six years. It is chaired by i.d.r. the Bishop of the Evangelical - Lutheran Church of Hanover. Currently Bishop Ralf Meister is Chairman of the Missionsauschusses.

The Committee is an Executive Committee, which consists of five members.

The Committee, inter alia, responsible for policies and guidelines on the work of Missions, for the appointment and dismissal of the Director or the Director, to amend the statutes and the dissolution of the Missions.

Board of Directors

The Board consists of the Director as Chairman, the pastor must be one of the member churches, the Managing Director and three other members. The Board implements the decisions of the Mission Committee. The term of office of the Board shall be five years. The Director shall be elected by the Mission Committee for ten years, re-election is permitted.
