The seaport Evdilos ( Ευδήλος ( m. sg. ) ) With 501 inhabitants ( 2011), together with the local communities Arethousa, Dafni, Karavastamo, Manganitis and Fran Dato since 2011 the same district Evdilos on the Greek island of Ikaria. 1918 recognized as a rural community ( kinotita ), it was enlarged over time by incorporations and last ( Dimos Evdilou ) established in 1997 by merger with five other rural communities as a municipality in the prefecture of Samos Evdilos. With the administrative reform of 2010, this church went on as district Evdilos in the newly created municipality Ikaria, which covers the entire island and since then has been in this one of three municipal districts.

Location

The area rises from the north coast to the main ridge of the Atherasgebirges that pervades the island along its entire length from northeast to southwest, to. The border with the municipality of Agios Kirykos in the East runs over a length of about 7 km in the immediate vicinity of the main ridge to the highest point on the island, the 1037 m high Efanos ( Εφανός ). To the south, the terrain drops steeply into the sea. The municipality Ikaria lies to the west.

Structure

The municipality is divided into six local communities with numerous settlements. The population figures are from the census of 2011.

Evdilos ( Ευδήλος ( m. sg. ) ) IEGT on the north coast about 40 km northwest of Agios Kirykos. The town was founded after 1830. During the second Ottoman occupation was Evdilos 1834-1912 capital of the island.

Arethousa ( Αρέθουσα ( f sg ) ) is situated on a mountain ridge 300 meters above sea level and is bordered to the east Evdilos

Dafni ( Δάφνη ( f sg ) ) is located south of Evdilos. The associated settlements are situated in the immediate vicinity of the only road that leads in the central island area to the south of the island.

Karavastamo ( Καραβόσταμο (n. sg. ) ) Is located in the northeast on the border of the municipality of Agios Kirykos.

Manganitis ( Μαγγανίτης ( m. sg. ) ) Lies on the south side of the island.

Fran Dato ( Φραντάτο (n. sg. ) ) Is located west of Evdilos and adjoins the municipality Ikaria.

  • Pigi the monastery Theoktistis located near the village ( Μονή Θεοκτίστης ). It is named after an eponymous nun from Lesbos. The monastery was founded in the Byzantine period. The first church was built under rocks around 1300 AD. During the heyday, the late 15th century, the monastery was inhabited by about 100 monks. Since 1982, the monastery is deserted.
  • Kambos ( Κάμπος ( m. sg. ) ), In the area of the village lies the ancient city of Ini ( Οινόη ), which was the capital of the island from ancient times to the Byzantine period. The ancient harbor that lay at the mouth of the river Voutside is silted up by alluvial material of the river and is now off the sea. From the city ruins of the city walls, the stadium and some of the buildings are visible. Wine production also awarded the town wealth, why have contributions to the federal treasury of the Delian League. The Museum of Kambos located next to the Agia Irini Church which was built on the ruins of an ancient temple of Dionysus. The museum houses alongside finds from antiquity also tools from the Neolithic period.
