Evelyn Beatrice Hall

Evelyn Beatrice Hall ( * 1868, † after 1939 ) was an English writer who wrote under the pseudonym SG Tallentyre. She is primarily known for her biography of Voltaire, completed in 1906, which was published under the title The Friends of Voltaire.

From Hall of the often quoted phrase "I disapprove of what you say, but would defend to the death your right to say it ", which is often mistakenly attributed to Voltaire comes. She used it in her biography of Voltaire as an illustration of Voltaire's settings. The phrase is often cited to describe the principle of freedom of expression.

Hall probably had a significant impact on the lives of Hugh Stowell Scott ( pseudonym: Henry Seton Merriman ). At his death in 1903 he left Hall £ 5000 with the note " in gratitude for continued support and literary advice, without which I would never have been able to live by his writing ." The sum corresponds to an inflation-adjusted amount between £ 400,000 and £ 3.5 million (as of 2010 ).
