Evgraf Semenovich Sorokin

Jewgraf Semenovich Sorokin (Russian Евграф Семёнович Сорокин, scientific transliteration Evgraf Semenovic Sorokin, December 6, 1821 in Bolschije solos in Kostroma, † 1892 in Moscow) was a Russian painter who primarily and in the field of history painting, religious painting genre painting was active and became known.

His first training in the field of painting he was commissioned by a local artist in Yaroslavl. In 1841 he was inducted into the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. In 1845 he finished his education here and went for several years abroad in Europe. He visited Germany, Belgium, France and Spain, as well as Syria and Egypt. After returning to Russia, he was appointed academician of the arts. In 1859, he taught in the character class of the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. In 1878 he was appointed professor.

Sorokin created icons and wall displays with the portraits of the Evangelists; next came a series of paintings that have scenes of life in Italy and Spain to content. In the 1860s he led the work at the Moscow Christ the Savior Cathedral.
