Evince

Evince is a document viewer for Portable Document Format (PDF) and PostScript format for the GNOME desktop environment, distributed as free software under the GNU General Public License ( GPL). It is mainly in C, written the interface for the Poppler library used in C . The goal of evince is to the various documents viewer of GNOME how to replace Gnome Ghostview ( CDR) and GPdf, by a single and easy to use application.

History

Evince ( engl. to evince sth means sth sth show or express ) began as a revision of the GPdf - code, which was hard to maintain. After a short development time Evince surpassed the functionality of its predecessor. It will continue to actively developed and maintained. Evince is one of the projects, which was supported by Google as part of the Summer of Code 2006.

Evince is since GNOME 2.12, released on 7 September 2005, part of the work environment. Since version 2:28 GNOME (23 September 2009) is a Windows version is available.

Supported document formats

Evince supports many different formats, a current listing can be found on the website. Despite the many document formats Evince is from his goal to be a universal viewing application, or removed. It not only lacks support for popular formats of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel ), but also the open source world ( Abiword, OpenOffice.org ).
