Evinrude Outboard Motors

Under the brand name of Evinrude outboard engines were produced primarily in the United States under changing company name and sold worldwide.

The name comes from the first founder, Ole Evinrude (1877-1934), a native of Norway engineer and inventor.

History

1907 Ole Evinrude developed his first outboard motor and founded the company " Evinrude Motor Co. ". Four years later he sold 50 percent of its shares in the company to the President of the " Meyer Tug Boat Lines" Chris Meyer. The company was then renamed " Evinrude Detachable Row Boat Motor Co. ". 1914 Chris Meyer acquired the remaining shares of Evinrude.

1928 bought the American automotive Briggs & Stratton, the company Evinrude. At this time, Evinrude was with the production figures far behind its direct competitors, " Johnson ". Just one year later, the three companies ' Evinrude Motor Company "," Lockwood Motor Company " and was founded in 1921 by Ole Evinrude " ELTO Outboard Motor Company " merged to " Outboard Motors Corporation ", short OMC together. The outboard engines were produced but sold unchanged under the three well-known brand names.

1934 first time designed by product designer Brooks Stevens for a Evinrude outboard motor. Stevens worked until the 1960s for Evinrude and many of the developed products in this period came from his pen. 1936 took over the competitors OMC Johnson. The identical outboard engines were further marketed under the name " Evinrude " and " Johnson ".

OMC expanded continuously over the following fifty years, and in 1982 was the world's largest manufacturer of outboard motors. In 1988 the company began the development of a direct injected 2-stroke engine with Orbital licenses. 1993 OMC acquired the licenses of German direct injection Ficht FFI and 51 percent of the company shares the Ficht GmbH. Two years later, the company produced a V6 Zweitaktermotor with the FFI - injection system. Had the 110 kW ( 150 hp) motor payable over a comparable conventional engine reduced fuel consumption by 30 percent and reduced by 80 percent emissions.

2000 OMC reported to the bankruptcy and a year later was taken over by the Canadian group Bombardier Inc.. The rights to the direct injection system FFI Bombardier secured also. 2003, the area in the Bombardier Recreational Products has been spun. The outboard engines have since been marketed under the name " Evinrude ". The engine range was expanded in 2006 and included about 15 models. The power of the motors were depending on the model at 29 kW ( 40 hp) to 184 kW (250 hp).

Since 2007 Evinrude engines meet the emission standards of 2006EPA and 2008CARB "Three star ultra low emission standards" and are therefore allowed on Lake Constance.

Developments

From the 1950s to the 1960s developed some remarkable boats and Evinrude outboard engines, which were designed by Brooks Stevens.

Motors

Evinrude always built two-stroke engines. According to the rules of the European " RCD " and in the U.S. the "EPA" need new boat engines, among others comply with certain emission limits. This is not possible with two - stroke engines with conventional carburettor technology. Evinrude used to falling below these limits the Direkteinspritsystem the German company Provenion (until 2000 Fa Ficht ). Since its introduction in 1995, the system has been further developed and is now under the name "E -TEC " market leader, both in the number of pieces, as well as in the reduction of emissions. All current Evinrude engines are two-stroke engine with "E -TEC " direct injection.
