From 1912 to 2002 Evje was the site of the military camp Evjemoen, which was used as a camp for Soviet prisoners of war during World War II under German occupation. Today, there are still some overgrown minefields in the forest.

In " Evjemoen " is the " community management ", a kindergarten (the old officers' mess ), and a rafting Enter, which is operated as a hostel. Just as there are businesses and housing options.

Because of the rich mineral deposits long time mines were operated in the city. In Evje there was nickel mines and nickel processing. The nickel copper mine Flott (1872-1946) was at one time Europe 's largest producer of nickel ore. The ore obtained in Evje was also used in the metal industry of Kristiansand. Today, however, most of these mines are closed, and there is only a tourist mine opened.

The Geology Museum at the waterfall Fennefoss operates a mineral and a home collection and the old pharmacy, which was also a police station earlier.
