Évolène (cattle)

The Evolène Evolène or beef cattle breed is an ancient house of the Valais. It is one of the endangered breeds of domestic animals and is cared for in a project of the ProSpecieRara.

Appearance feature

The Evolène beef is a mittelrahmiges, black and white or brown and white pied cattle. It is one of the so-called dual-purpose cattle, wherein the mast power is greater than the milk yield. Similar to the Eringer cattle enter the Evolène annually around 3,200 kilograms of milk. Your fat content is 3.8 percent. The breed is mountain running and sure-footed and can therefore be used in the alpine economy.

Similar to the Pinzgauer the white body hair is found predominantly on the back and on the belly. The bark is strongly muscled; particularly striking is the strong Halsbemuskelung the cows. It usually occurs in dual-purpose cattle only in bulls. Evolène have short, strong legs and a short, broad head. Note the very strong and relatively long horns. The withers when bulls are in 130 centimeters. They weigh fully grown 600 to 700 kilograms. Cows are much smaller. They reach a height at the withers 115-125 cm and then weigh between 400 and 500 kilograms.

Similar to the Tux and when Eringer cattle also Evolène cows have a high potential for aggression. The cows fight in some long-lasting battles the rank order among themselves.

Breeding history

The Evolène beef is a very ancient breed of Valais. It is mottled with white on black, red or maroon color. The ancestors of Evolène cattle should already have been brought by the Romans in this area. Genetically they are the solid black, maroon or Vistula colored Eringer cattle not only very close but they have a common root. From 1880 began the trend to grow the Evolène Eringer or monochrome. 1885 monochrome was declared a breeding goal. Henceforth the solid colored animals were regarded as Eringer, the weißgescheckten as Evolène. The breeding center is located around the village Evolène, located in a side valley of the Rhone. Around the year there were about 150 animals that are attributed to this breed. However, only 100 of them were registered in the herd book.
