Evolène

Evolène [ ɛvɔlɛnə̯ ] (also Evolena, in the local Provençal dialect: [( ew ) ɔlɛiŋna ] ) is a village and a municipality in the district Hérens in the French speaking part of the canton of Valais in Switzerland. The municipality also includes the villages of Lannaz, La Sage, La Sage / Villa ( z ), La Forclaz, Arolla and Ferpècle.

History

The municipality was created in 1882 by the municipality of separation Hérens Evolène and Saint -Martin VS.

On February 21, 1999, there came to the avalanche of Evolène, in which 12 people died.

Geography

The municipal area extends from the upper part of the Val d' Hérens to the Italian border. In the valley flows the Borgne. Its highest point reaches the municipal area at the top of the 4'357 m high Dent Blanche. The municipality comprises the towns of Evolène, Villaz, La La Sage Forclaz, La Sage and Arolla.

The Swiss neighboring municipalities are clockwise ( in the southwest starting ): Bagnes, Hérémence, Saint -Martin VS, Grimentz, Ayer and Zermatt. In the south, bordering the municipality of Italy.

Population and language

Evolène is one of the few communities in the French speaking part of Switzerland, where still Arpitan is ( there called patois ) spoken.

Attractions

On the Alpage de Cotter on Evolène are several prehistoric shell stones, including the Pierre aux Immolés (stone of the Sacrificed ).
