Evzones

Evzone (Greek Εύζωνες, Evzones = " Wohlgegürtete " in the sense of light-armed troops ) called soldiers of the former royal bodyguard Greek. The official name of the elite regiment is 1974 Presidential Guard ( Προεδρική Φρουρά ).

History

Evzonen were called in ancient Hellas, the elite units of the Spartans ( Myrmidons ). They have a long tradition in the history of Greece as a protector of the Hellenic territory against invading peoples and armies. They also played a crucial role in the revolution against Ottoman rule.

Today's Evzonen were founded by King Otto, the court dress was designed by Queen Amalia. It consists of the Fustanella ( short white pleated skirt) and the Fermeli ( doublet ), sewn and embroidered by specially trained soldiers. These include the krossia ( apron made of silk strips ) and the tsarouchia ( Pointed shoes with tassel).

Since the abolition of the monarchy are the Evzonen the presidential guard and take guard and representation tasks. It is in the Evzonen today to an elite regiment of the Greek Army.

At Syntagma Square in front of the Parliament Building is an hourly rather than a changing of the guard in front of the grave of Evzonen the Unknown Soldier.
