Ewald Nowotny

Ewald Nowotny ( born June 28, 1944 in Vienna ) is a former Austrian politician and economist and since 1 September 2008, Governor of the Austrian National Bank. Beginning of 2013, his contract was extended for another six years ( September 1, 2013). From 2006 to the end of 2007 Nowotny was CEO of BAWAG PSK.

Political activities

From 1974 to 1999, Nowotny member of the district party committee of the SPÖ Linz and 1978-1999 Member of Parliament.

From 1989 to 1999 Nowotny was

  • Member of the State Board of Education SPÖ Upper Austria
  • Chairman of the SPÖ Federal Education Committee
  • Executive Board of the Section for Economic Affairs of the Federal Social Democratic academics, intellectuals and artists (BSA )
  • Deputy Chairman of the Club of the Socialist MPs and cabinet ministers.

From 1990 to 1999 he was also a member of the Federal Executive of the SPÖ. In 1999, Ewald Nowotny has covered all his political functions and offices.

He is a member of the Trilateral Commission.

Criticism

As President of the National Bank Nowotny was concerned about the level of public debt in Austria. As a longtime financial spokesman for his party in the National Assembly, he was himself instrumental in the budget policies of the grand coalition from 1986 to 2000. In this time of government debt increased by nearly 52 to 66 percent of GDP, the annual budget deficit averaged about three percent. According to the liberal economic journalist Michael Fleischhacker Nowotny himself was mitverantlich for high deficits; he was " the scientific appeasement Councilor of the large coalition government debt policy."
