Ewald, with the ( rare ) variants Ewalt, Ewaldt, is an old German, male first name, which is also found as a surname in use today.

Origin and Meaning

The name is, like many other old German name also composed of two single words, namely waltan exercise from the Old High German noun ewa with the basic meaning ' law, law and order ' and also Old High German verb meaning prevail (be ), govern, guard. The word therefore means approximately ' of the (legal) order guarding, which the law -managing / by the law Wielding ', so designate a law enforcement officer, judge or similar officials.
