Ewe people

The Ewe (also: EBRD, yew, Eve, Efe, Eue, Vhe, Gbe, Krepi, Krepe or Popo ) are a West African ethnic group, living mainly along the coast in the east of Ghana and in Togo today. Their language is also called Ewe and is counted among the Gbe languages.

According to tradition, Ewe came from the 17th century from northern Benin to the border with Nigeria. The largest sub-group are the Anlo. Livelihood are fishing and agriculture. There are mainly planted maize, cassava and oil palm.

Ewe are predominantly Christians, but also still believe in their traditional religions or practice mixed forms. The world creator goddess Mawu is within the traditional religions is a particularly prominent deity
