Exciter (Album)

Occupation

Exciter is the tenth studio album by British synthpop band Depeche Mode. It was recorded in various studios in London, Santa Barbara and New York. As a producer hired the band Mark Bell, head and founder member of the British music project LFO.

Background

After the Singles Tour 1998, the band members retreated initially and devoted themselves to their families. Martin Gore began in 1999 with the writing of new songs, but he lacked the motivation and inspiration. That's why he invited his friend and musician Paul Freegard and producers Gareth Jones, who worked with Depeche Mode in the mid- 80s, in his private studio in Santa Barbara, California, a. With their (especially moral ) support succeeded Gore, recording demos, which he finally presented the remaining band members. The actual work on the album began in mid- 2000 after Mark Bell could still be involved as a producer.

Immediately after release of the album started Depeche Mode Exciter tour worldwide. The two concerts at the Palais Omnisports de Paris -Bercy were filmed by Anton Corbijn and released in 2002 as a live DVD One Night in Paris. After the conclusion of the tour the band members own projects dedicated. Martin Gore published 2003 Counterfeit ² is his second solo album, while Dave Gahan Paper Monsters for his debut even wrote songs for the first time. Andrew Fletcher marketed through his own label, Toast Hawaii, the British band client. Only in 2005 Depeche Mode returned with a new album, Playing the Angel, back.

Reception

The trade press rated Exciter overwhelmingly positive. Thus, for example, wrote laut.de: "It looks good for the future of Depeche Mode. " Exciter " is the step forward. If this is the beginning of a new decade, Depeche Mode, Mark Bell could be the new Gareth Jones. That man drove the guys from back in the 80s from the mixer into the great successes. He was only the third album. "

Title list

All songs were written by Martin Gore, who also sings the songs " Comatose " and " Breathe". The rest of the songs Dave Gahan sings, " Love Theme " and " Easy Tiger " are instrumentals.

This and That

  • The album cover, designed by Anton Corbijn, is an agave.
  • On most of Europe concerts of the Exciter Tour Fad Gadget occurred in the opening act. Conversely, it was 1980 Fad Gadget, who was playing the then-unknown band at his concerts as the opening act.
  • While only 8 of the 13 album songs were played live on the Exciter tour, it was ever only one in the touring Touring the Angel 2005/ 06 ( " Goodnight Lovers" ) and Tour of the Universe 2009/10 ( " Free Love ," and this only at a few shows).
