Exercise RIMPAC

RIMPAC (short for Rim of the Pacific; German: peripheral zone of the Pacific) is a biennial barred multinational military exercises in June or July at Honolulu, Hawaii. It is carried out and planned by the United States Pacific Fleet, part of the United States Navy. In addition to the countries bordering the Pacific, the United States Marine Corps, the United States Coast Guard, the United States National Guard, nor the Royal Navy is also invited to participate.

Objectives

As part of the RIMPAC be anti-submarine, air defense, battlefield management against surface targets, amphibious operations and mine warfare and Maritime Interception Operations, interception, and search civilian vessels rehearsed. Particular emphasis is placed on multinational cooperation.

The maneuver is performed here with the backdrop of an invasion of the People's Republic of China in Taiwan ( Taiwan conflict) as well as possible attacks by North Korea on South Korea.

History

The first RIMPAC was held in 1971. The place which takes place in June and July of exercise are the waters off Hawaii, where the United States Pacific Command has its headquarters. For all RIMPACs addition to the U.S. Navy, the Canadian Navy and the Royal Australian Navy were also involved. Other participants were Japan, the UK, Korea, Chile and Peru. The armed forces of the United States are regularly represented by participants in the United States Air Force, the United States Marine Corps and the United States Coast Guard and the National Guard of Hawaii.

These states represent each time around 50 ships and submarines together, also up to 200 aircraft and 20,000 soldiers. On a strategic level and operationally non- participating nations can participate.

2012

In 2012 there were a total of 23 RIMPAC exercise. It started on 29 June 2012 with 42 ships, 200 aircraft and 25,000 military personnel from 22 nations. For the first time the maneuver was not passed by the U.S. Navy. The Royal Australian Navy took over the management of the naval forces, the air forces were led by the Royal Canadian Air Force. On 14 July, the USS Niagara Falls ( AFS -3) was sunk at a SINKEX. Throughout the exercise, the U.S. Navy tested the use of biofuels to their ships. They spent 12 million U.S. dollars 450,000 gallons ( approximately 1,703,435.30 liters). On July 17, the USNS Henry J. Kaiser (T- AO -187 ) yielded 900,000 gallons ( approximately 3,406,870.61 liters) Organic and conventional fuels to the Carrier Strike Group USS Nimitz (CVN -68). It was also the first use of the Boeing P -8A "Poseidon". Two machines of Air Test and Evaluation Squadron One ( VX -1) were used by the Marine Corps Base Hawaii for 24 scenarios.

RIMPAC 2012 ended in August 3, 2012.

Participating countries and units

In total, 22 nations participating. Colombia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Netherlands, Norway, Peru, Philippines, Thailand, Tonga and the United Kingdom sent only military personnel. Russia first took part in RIMPAC and despatched a ship. Another 10 States sent ships .. In detail were:

2014

RIMPAC 2014 will be the 24th exercise and is discharged in the summer of 2014.

For the first time the Navy of Norway will participate with a frigate Fridtjof Nansen class.
