Band History

The first successes as a pop band

In 1973 they succeeded with Try It On a first placement at the rear of the American pop charts. Mid-1978 they succeeded with that of the British hit writers Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman ( Smokie, Suzi Quatro, The Sweet, etc.) composed pop- rock track Kiss You All Over, an international top hit ( U.S. # 1, Germany Course 3, UK # 6 ). On this success they could not continue to build. Your two successor title achieved in Germany, the UK and the USA again middle positions, then Exile had almost disappeared from the pop charts. They lost their record contract and were forced - to hoof it through the club scene of Kentucky - as in the beginning of her career.

Success with country rock

J. P. Pennington and Sonny LeMaire began to write songs that were picked up by well-known country greats such as Kenny Rogers and Janie Fricke. Exile approached then the country music and signed in 1983 at the Nashville Epic label. At this time, the band consisted of J. P. Pennington, Sonny LeMaire, Les Taylor, Marlon Hargis, and Steve Goetzman.

In 1983 they were able to place first in the American country charts and there were 1983-1993 times at No. 1 Exile had thus become the main competitors of existing country-rock group Alabama. The successes come at a time when country music had moved closer to commercial pop music. The mid-eighties was launched a counter-movement of the new traditionalists of the so-called New Country, and Exile, which basically combined poorly with traditional Country & Western, now quickly lost ground again.

Personnel changes were the result: Marlon Hargis was replaced by Lee Carroll and Les Taylor by Mark Jones. Finally, in 1989 even left the group founder Pennington - his place was Paul Martin. In 1990 it was replaced with Arista label. There were still some moderately successful hits, then the record company lost interest in further cooperation and Exile broke up. 1995 you found yourself but once again to produce a final album together.
