Exmes

Exmes is a commune of 308 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Orne in Basse-Normandie region.

Geography

Exmes located 15 kilometers northeast of Argentan. The rivers Dives and Barges flow through the community.

History

At the time of the Merovingian Exmes was an important city of Neustria ( 511-737 ) and governor's mansion. 869 Castle Exmes was conquered by the Normans. In 1449 it was conquered by the English.

During World War II (1939-1945) Exmes was liberated by the French 2nd Armored Division on 19 August 1944.

Population Development

1811, the municipalities Chaufour and Saint- Arnoult were incorporated. Chaufour had 37 inhabitants in 1806, and Saint- Arnoult 76 Most residents had Exmes 1836 (805 ), then the number of inhabitants declined.

Attractions

The Château de Saint- Arnoult castle is privately owned. It was built in the 18th century.

The ruins of a medieval castle located in the village of Le Château above the village center. The ruins are classified as a monument historique (historic monument). Between 1182 and 1190 the donjon was built. In 1605 the castle was razed. The stones were used for the construction of the priory of Notre- Dame-des -Loges. Between 1879 and 1889 a chapel was built on the summit of the hill on which the castle was built, built, which was dedicated to Saint Chrodegang.

The Romanesque church of St André dates from the 11th century and contains the furniture of the Priory, which is now only a ruin. The church is the oldest church in Normandy.

Economy
