Expanded Disability Status Scale

The Expanded Disability Status Scale ( EDSS ) is a technology developed by John F. Kurtzke performance scale, which indicates the severity of disability in multiple sclerosis patients at the time of the survey. The scale starts at 0.0 degrees and 10.0 degrees at ends, with higher levels can be achieved in the course of the disease, only a part of the patients.

The doctor refers to when determining the degree of the study of the functional systems (FS) of the patient.

Functional Systems ( FS)

  • Pyramidal tract, such as paralysis
  • Cerebellum, such as ataxia, tremor
  • Brain stem, such as voice / swallowing disorders
  • Sensorium, such as reduction of the touch sense
  • Bladder and bowel functions, such as urinary or fecal incontinence
  • Visual functions, such as restricted visual field scotoma
  • Cerebral functions, such as changes in personality, dementia
