Expert shopping

Expert shopping refers to the selection of experts, in which the primary search criterion is not the best possible expertise, but his willingness to confirm the preconceived notion of the searcher. This procedure is practiced in the news media, politics and in legal proceedings.

The term comes from the media criticism and is used to assess violations of journalistic standards.

Examples

Examples of experts include the shopping behavior of the U.S. television network CBS, who was investigating the authenticity of a memo to the career of the later U.S. President George W. Bush in the National Guard so long by experts until he received a positive feedback. The memo was later debunked by bloggers as simple forgery of Microsoft Word, CBS anchorman Dan Rather's career took damage.
