Exploits River

The Exploits River is a river which flows through the central part of the present Canada's Atlantic coast island of Newfoundland.

It has a length of 246 miles and drains an area of 11,200 km ². It forms the outflow of the Red Indian Lake. With the source river Lloyds River he is with 322 km the longest river in Newfoundland. It flows near Botwood in the Bay of Exploits.

This river is a spawning ground for Atlantic salmon and other fish. The stock of salmon increased significantly after installation of fish ladders, as this previously inaccessible sections of the river were reached for the fish. In the river valley live woodland caribou, moose and black bear. In Grand Falls -Windsor and Bishop 's Falls, there are hydroelectric power plants. Important industries in the area are forestry and mining.

On the riverfront, the people of the Beothuk, the near Red Indian Lake had a winter camp alive. Spent the summer there with fishing on the Bay of Exploits, by used the river as a route.

The town of Twillingate is built on two adjacent islands in the mouth of the Exploits River.

2003 forced a flood of the River exploits the evacuation of the town of Badger.
