Expression cassette

The term expression cassette refers to a DNA segment that is responsible for the synthesis of an RNA. Such a " cassette" consists of the following elements:

  • Promoter ( essential for the initiation of transcription of DNA into RNA)
  • Ribosome binding site ( as a finished product to be produced is a protein, the corresponding mRNA must possess a binding site for protein synthesis )
  • Protein coding sequence ( prepared as a final product to be a protein, the RNA must have an initiation codon, a coding sequence and a stop codon for protein synthesis have )
  • Terminator ( causes the termination of transcription of DNA into RNA)

Up to the promoter elements mentioned above may be waived in the artificial construction at all when they are not necessary for the appropriate product. Without a promoter is not possible to build expression cassette.
