The Polish Droga ekspresowa S22 ( ger. for, expressway S22 ') connects with the Elbing located in the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad Oblast Kaliningrad. On the Russian side is called the continuation of the road, R516. The S22 and R516 are part of the European route E28.

History

It was built as part of the Reich Autobahn Berlin- Konigsberg and einstreifig completed in the years 1936 until 1938. After the Second World War were a result of the decisions of the Teheran conference, the Yalta Conference and the Potsdam Conference in the southern parts of East Prussia to Poland, the northern, so that the highway was due to belonging to the Soviet Union RSFSR on the territory of two states. A border crossing was not set up until the political changes in the two countries.

Completed sections

From 2006 to 2008, the S22 from the ground has been refurbished and modernized. The line was not extended to the entire length with two lanes. Of the 50.2 miles are 38.9 kilometers between the nodes Elbląg Wschód and Maciejewo with a, 12.2 km from the nodes equipped Maciejewo up to the border crossing with two lanes. The costs were to 479 million zlotys (equivalent to 120 million euros ) set. The border crossing Mamonowo II Grzechotki ( Heiligenbeil - Rehfeld ) between Russia and Poland was opened on 7 December 2010. The capacity of the crossing is designed for daily 26,000 passenger cars, 1,250 trucks and 150 buses.

Further plans

In Infrastructure and Development Plan of Poland ( Narodowy plan Rozwoju ) of 2005 it is provided that the S22 after 2013 along the Droga Krajowa 22 Elbląg - Gorzów Wielkopolski is extended to complement the existing network of highways and for the production of regional sustainability. Then create a polygonal path of about 370 kilometers in length.
