Planning history

The network plans of Poland from 1945 to 1946 contained a compound Prague - Wroclaw - Lodz - Warsaw - Białystok - Vilnius, with a common route with the compound poses between Łódź and Warsaw - Warsaw was provided. In 1963, the route was Prague - Wroclaw also provided. Between Wrocław and Łódź, however, there were two possible routes: a V- solution with the routes Wrocław - Łódź and Poznań - Łódź and a Y solution with the routes poses - Kalisz, Lodz - Kalisz Kalisz and - Breslau (joint line ). The course should then be passed on from Lodz Warsaw, Białystok towards Grodno. In 1971, the route from Prague via Breslau was up north Łódź planned, where they on the route Poznan - Wroclaw should meet. A branch line should branch off from Kalisz to Lodz. From Piotrków a highway to Warsaw along the present main road 8 was also planned. From Warsaw then two highways should be built: one to Białystok along the present main road 8, the others were Transboundary to Augustów along the present main road 61 lines no longer provided. In 1976, the connection was Prague - Wroclaw planned directly to Lodz. The network also contained only the distance Piotrków - Warsaw - Białystok - Augustów. In 1985, the entire route was also included, but further configured via Suwałki to Kaunas. Wroclaw - - In 1993, the line was Prague Łódź planned as motorway A8. The section Piotrków - Warsaw was deleted. The plan contained now from Warsaw again two routes, namely along the country road about 8 Białystok to Vilnius and from this line branching off along the province road 677 and state road 61 connecting through Suwałki to Riga. 1996 changed only that now the route Piotrków - Warsaw was included again. 2001, the status of the route Wroclaw was - Łódź of a highway in the amended an expressway. It accounted for the connection Prague - Wroclaw as well as the routes Piotrków - Warsaw and the branch line along the province road 677 and State Road 61 to Augustów. The S8 device should now be routed via Białystok, Augustów to Riga. 2003, the circumvention of Breslau was re- configured as A8. The remaining stretch of the S8 received its present course. 2004 changed this state of affairs any more. In October 2009, the planning for the expressway S61 was resumed. The decision to build the S61 but the S8 is only built to Białystok. There they will meet on the expressway S19.

Scheduling conflicts and protests

Route in the region of Łódź

For the section of the S8 between Kępno and the A1 three route alternatives have been developed. The first, also known as Łódź northern variant or variant should lead by Kępno about Sieradz, Zdunska Wola, Lask, Pabianice the A1 and at the same time form the southern part of the motorway ring around Łódź. The second, referred to as southern variant, should run from Kępno about Wieluń, Belchatow after Piotrków. A third variant was of Kępno about Zloczew directly by Lask and then planned on the northern variant of the A1, so without connecting the cities Sieradz and Zdunska Wola. In June 2007, the agency responsible for planning company GDDKiA opted for the southern option. In support, it was argued that only the southern route funding a grant from the EU is possible that the northern route verliefe by the Natura 2000 area has a calm atmosphere Valley, that the proximity to the toll A2 would result in the diversion on the north variant that the fee collection on the common route of S8 is problematic with the A1 between Łódź and Piotrków and the route immediately after Piotrków because of the including routes there S12 and S74 is more favorable. This led to large protests by the population in the cities Sieradz, Zdunska Wola and Lask, who had promised a connection in their region to the expressway network in Poland. Sometimes even roadblocks were carried out to give emphasis to the demand for a Northern variant. Proponents of the north section, submitted that the main regional cities subject to her that lived here ten times the population of the developed areas and the southern variant that in Lask an important NATO airport would be connected. Meanwhile, the GDDKiA had changed their plans in May and June 2009, hearings were held on the plans of the S8 over the northern variant. Finally they decided on the implementation of the Northern variant which is planned by the year 2014.

Augustow bypass and cross the Rospuda valley

In the course of planning the S8 Warsaw -Riga was working on a bypass road for Augustów in north-eastern Poland since 1992. There have been several variants tested and eventually released a route for the construction that cuts the Natura 2000 protected area Rospuda Valley. Against the construction, widespread resistance suggested. In February 2007, the Commission of the European Union stepped in and ordered an immediate halt to construction. In the selected route a significant threat to the habitats of protected plant and animal species, in particular a considerable disruption for many bird species have been seen, which is contrary to European law. Also saw you at risk to aquatic ecosystems and water quality through the project. It was argued that the proposed projects in ecological compensation measures do not comply with EU law. On 16 September 2008 the Supreme Administrative Court in Poland stopped the construction of the Via Baltica through the Rospuda Valley. A change of plan was therefore necessary.

Meanwhile, the agency responsible for planning GDDKiA branch has presented a new report on the environmental impact assessment of the so-called Raczki variant on 8 July 2009, which provides for the construction of the S8 along the DW664 and DW655 over the place Raczki. Thus, the method for determining the line and the determination of the plan is to be initiated. The fact that the planning was resumed for the expressway S61 in October 2009, all plans of the bypass Augustów were canceled as part of the S8 express road, because the S8 will lead only to to Białystok.
