Extensor hallucis longus muscle

The musculus extensor hallucis longus (Latin for " long big toe extensors ") is a skeletal muscle of the leg and one of the extensors in the lower leg. In the upper part it is covered by the tibialis anterior and extensor digitorum longus.

Animals in the muscle is also called musculus extensor digiti I longus. In animals with a reduced number of toes rays (eg, horses, cattle, goats) he does not appear as an independent muscle.

Function

The musculus extensor hallucis longus is responsible for dorsiflexion ( pulling it upward ) of the big toe ( hallux ). He is also involved in the dorsiflexion of the foot.

In the animals with an independent musculus extensor digiti I longus (eg predators, pigs, sheep) this prevents the ankle and stretches the Innenzehe.
