External fixation
An external fixator (French, German, External fixation devices ') is a through the skin from the outside ( "external" ) mounted holding system to immobilize a part of the body. This pins are anchored in the bone, and (optionally after successful setting up of bone fracture ( repositioning ) ) fixed to a rigid, so rigid device ( metal rods ). There is an internal fixation.
Use
- Used in open fractures with soft tissue damage, in comminuted fractures and occasionally pseudarthrosis.
- It can also be used to stiffen the joints on purpose (so-called arthrodesis ) as for example, external to the knee joint as a joint cross- brace.
- In fracture of the cervical spine ( Halofixateur )
- In open fractures, 2nd or 3rd degree of the external fixator is the treatment of choice.
- Certain deformities a fixator can be applied for correction. This occurs at X and O legs or a leg length discrepancy.
- Also in segment transports, a fixator can be used. Here the Ilizarov ring fixator is particularly suitable.
Complications
Complications of the treatment, the pin -track infection ( infection of the soft tissues around the Pinstellen ) and by the direct connection of the body surface with the bone, the infection of the bone ( osteomyelitis / Osteiitis ). Longer immobilization with a fixator it comes to shrinkage (atrophy ) of muscles, shortening of tendons and ligaments as well as the shrinkage of joint capsule.
