Exultavit cor nostrum

Exultavit cor nostrum is an Apostolic Letter in the form of a Papal bull and was written by Pope Urban IV in 1263. This was the first contact with the leader of the Mongol dynasty of the Ilkhanate.

About this writing, there are different reviews. It is likely that the letter was a response to the communications from the papal envoy. As a counterweight to the Mamluks and the Turks in Anatolia Hülegü pursued a policy of alliance with Byzantium and sought contact with the Christian states of Western Europe and the Vatican. Thus, Hulagu said to have declared the intention to marry a Byzantine princess among his other wives. This looked Urban IV as a rapprochement with the West and welcomed in this bull this step, he interpreted this development as a tonic against the Golden Horde.
