Eyebrow flash

As eyes greeting is from Humanethologen a particular form of communication of people referred during which both eyebrows are raised briefly. Since this non-verbal signal usually completely unconscious and occurs in very different cultures is detectable, it is classified by the Humanethologen than innate.

With an eye greeting most people are considered in some, but not too far away: After production of eye contact eyebrows to be raised quickly for about one sixth of a second, and then lowered again. Is accompanied this by Irenaeus Eibl- Eibesfeldt until the mid- 1960s through the analysis of slow-motion shots discovered patterns regularly further, rapid muscle movements: The eyes greeting preceded by a short, jerky raising of the head, with the raising of the eyebrows, a smile spreads over the face, and often follows a friendly nod.

From Eibl- Eibesfeldt but also certain, apparently cultural differences were identified: So in Europe especially good acquaintances and friends are welcomed in this way, in Samoa, however, he is especially strangers. In Japan, he is scarcely observed among adults, since this change of facial expression is considered to be offensive; in communication from adults to small children, he nevertheless comes frequently. Eibl- Eibesfeldt pointed out in his study also indicate that the eye greeting can be interpreted consistently as a sign of friendly communication because he will stay with suspicious and aloof, reserved people.
