Eyjólfur " Jolly " Sverrisson ( born August 3, 1968 in Sauðárkrókur ) is a former Icelandic football player. After his career as a player he began a career as a football coach, where he oversees the Icelandic U- 21 team as head coach since 2009. In between, he was next to interim coach Pierre Littbarski in 2011 worked as an assistant coach at VfL Wolfsburg.

Playing career

Sverrisson began his career with Icelandic club Tindastóll Sauðárkrókur, where he was active for many years in the youth teams and has been used since 1985 for the men's team. So he came in the years 1985 to 1989 to a record of 79 league operations and the resulting 66 gates. During winter break 1989/90 he stood before a change on mainland Europe, where he finally signed a contract signed with VfB Stuttgart. Back then, as an attacker, he arrived on April 21, 1990 in a 3-1 home win against Werder Bremen at his Bundesliga debut. Coach Willi Entenmann brought Sverrisson in the 76th minute for Olaf Narrows. Sverrisson ran between 1990 and 2001 to a total of 60 times for the national team of Iceland. Here he succeeded in ten matches. Throughout his time as a selection player he was one of the stars of his team, but it did not manage to qualify the team for a World Cup or European Championship.

Coaching career

Since 1 November 2005 Sverrisson loosened his former mentor and former VfB players Ásgeir Sigurvinsson from a national coach of Iceland. With the discovery of the non-renewal of his contract Sverrisson came on 29 October 2007 from his office. In 14 international matches he could with his team recorded only two victories, including a 3-0 victory and a 2-1 win against Northern Ireland. The coach was replaced compatriot Ólafur Jóhannesson.

Since 2009, he supervised the Icelandic U-21 national team, which he led to the first finals appearance of a U- 21 Championship 2011.

In February 2011, after the dismissal of manager Steve McClaren at the German Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg and the takeover by assistant coach Pierre Littbarski Sverrisson has been added to the coaching staff of the wolves, where he worked as an assistant to Littbarski. The contact between Wolfsburg and Sverrisson came over Wolves manager Dieter Hoeness to the Sverrisson since his time in Berlin maintains a friendly relationship. After the signing of Felix Magath as head coach of VfL Wolfsburg on 18 March 2011 broke up the association of Sverrisson. His place as assistant coach took Bernd Hollerbach.

Trivia

  • Prior to his move to VfB Stuttgart Sverrisson has been an active basketball player. He was considered one of the best players of his country and was active until his move to Stuttgart to the Icelandic Basketball U- 21 team.
  • His son Hólmar Örn Eyjólfsson is current U -21 national team of Iceland and is available since July 2011 at VfL Bochum under contract.
  • Together with his father operates the former national player, a horse breeding in Iceland.
