Eywiller

Eywiller ( German Eyweiler ) is a commune of 262 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the Crooked Alsace in the department of Bas- Rhin in the Alsace region.

History

Like many rural communities in Alsace is the place a stronghold of right and nationalist parties. In elections in 2004, the French media were particularly interested in how the small Alsatian village Eywiller would choose, as in the presidential election of 2002 there about 45 % of the vote to Jean -Marie Le Pen had fallen. A French photographer had then scanned the windows of many houses and his photo exhibition provocatively healing Willer! mentioned. In protest now only 20% of eligible voters went to the ballot box. Thus, only 40 ballots were cast in the village, ten of which were also invalid. Eleven of the 30 valid votes were cast on extreme right-wing parties, twelve on the conservative ruling UMP party and the other on splinter parties.
