Fabric (geology)

The structure is in geology, the spatial position and arrangement of rocks and rock components. It is the study of rock-forming minerals ( grain structure ) as well as the rock as a whole and its combination with other rocks (large structure). Typical structure elements include grain size and shape, layering, foliation or jointing.

The customer structure is used to receive, record and evaluation of microstructural features. Their analysis allows to draw conclusions about the emergence of a rock (Genesis ) and the processes involved. In the mining industry or in engineering geological, hydro-geological or reservoir- known advanced applications, the structural analysis is an important basis for the planning and implementation of measures.

Grain structure

The grain structure of a rock is examined microscopically in thin sections in the petrography. It describes the individual grains or phases, ie the individual minerals and other ingredients of a rock.

Grain structure features are:

  • Spatial arrangement and orientation (texture)
  • Absolute and relative grain size, shape and mutual delimitation of the grains (structure)
  • Other properties.

Great structure

The bulk structure describes spatial observations from the handpiece of a rock to geological profile. It can be described at layer boundaries, fractures and faults as planar structures or as a linear structure to fold axes.

With a compass structure, the spatial position of a layer or other planar or linear geological structures can be measured in a single step.

Primary and secondary structure

The primary structure of a rock or a geological structure is created by the formation (e.g., the grain structure by the crystallization or sedimentation of the layering ). Subsequent events (eg tectonics ) Change microstructural properties and leave a secondary structure.

Examples

If the age distribution deposition sequence of a complex rock unclear (normal or overturned ), Geopetalgefüge can be used to determine the storage.
